Schoolies urged to be careful and to vote
November 10, 2007
With polling day falling in the middle of "schoolies" week, Labor candidate for Macquarie , Bob Debus, has called on high school graduates
from the Bathurst, Oberon, Blue Mountains and Lithgow areas
to take care as they celebrate and to remember to vote.
"
Many young people from our area will be travelling up and down
the coast or inter-state to celebrate the end of their school
years and the beginning of their adult working lives," said Mr Debus.
" More than ever, it's important to be careful, look after your
mates and, this year, don't forget to vote.
" There are many young people who care about important issues
like climate change, unfair workplace laws, access to a good
education and the war in Iraq.
" This election is their chance to express their opinions and
tell politicians what is important to them and their families."
Young people who will be absent from home on election day, November
24, can vote early at:
• Lithgow – Lithgow Commercial Premises, 18-20 Main St
• Bathurst – George St Plaza, 8/62 George St
• Katoomba – Katoomba/Leura Senior Citizens, Town Centre Arcade,
Katoomba St
• Springwood – Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) office,
Shop 4 Raymond Mall, Raymond Rd
• Springwood – Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) office,
Shop 4 Raymond Mall, Raymond Rd
A postal vote can also be arranged by contacting the Australian
Electoral Commission (AEC).
Mr Debus also called on young people to take care while partying
during schoolies week, reminding students to look after their
mates as well as themselves.
"
Always let your friends know where you are going, who you are
with and when you expect to be back," he said.
" And be aware of strangers, in particular those who are not recent
school leavers. Buy your own drinks, spiking is highly dangerous
and not a game.
" Plan ahead so you enjoy yourself, keep yourself safe, have a
say in your future, and return home safely with all your mates."
